History & Background

  • Our Association

    The Association, among other things, advises, consults and where necessary, joins issues with government and other bodies on matters that affect its members. MAN is the acknowledged representative of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria. Through its National Council and the Secretariat, the Association provides a variety of specialized services to individual members.

    National Council

    In directing MAN‘s affairs and determining its policy options, the National Council is served by an Executive Committee and five Standing Committees namely; Economic Policy Committee, Corporate Affairs and Strategic Planning Committee, Small and Medium Industry Committee, Infrastructure Committee and Finance and Establishment Committee.

    National Secretariat

    In addition, the Association has a network of sixteen branches as well as a liaison office in Abuja.


    Advocacy by the Association has led to improvement on some incentive schemes to Industry.

    • Manufacturers-In-Bond Scheme (MIBS) approved and enjoyed by some members
    • Prohibition on some products to protect some sectors e.g. textile products etc.
    • Establishment of Small and Medium Scale Industries Equity Investment Scheme (SMIEIS)
    • Reduction in banks‘ interest rate on lending

    The Association, since its establishment in 1971 has made giant strides in the areas of policy advocacy, business information and development as well as outright direct intervention. Some of the achievements are listed below:

    MAN has successfully positioned itself as a leading business Association recognized and respected by Government.
    In the management of the economy, the relevance of MAN has been appreciated through invitations to serve on many committees set up by government and other organizations viz:

    • Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting - Abuja 2003 Business Support Group
    • Specialized Committee of Stakeholders to Review the Status of the Pre-shipment Inspection Scheme Preparatory to the Introduction of Destination Inspection Scheme
    • Presidential Committee on Modalities for Engaging Nigerian Professionals in the Execution of Project.
    • Regional Organizing Committee on 3rd ECOWAS Trade Fair
    • Abolition of Dual Exchange rates.
    • Mediating on behalf of members on issues directly affecting them Customs, Police, Ports Authority and Local Government harassments.
    • Successful advocacy for the take-off of support institutions i.e. Bank of Industry (BOI), SMIDA etc. to provide finance and strategic intervention for the revitalization of industries in Nigeria.
    • Removal of VAT on industrial machinery.
    • Removal of import duty on some machinery e.g. CKD for Motor Assembly Plants.
    • Favourable and satisfactory interpretation of the Withholding Tax Law in respect of manufacturing inputs and some services.
    • Establishment of Fast Track Clearing Procedures at the Ports for Bonafide Manufacturers.
    • Protection of local industries from multiple taxation by persuading the Federal Government to promulgate Decree 21 of 1998 which defined the taxing powers of the three tiers of government.
    • Institution of legal action against some unfavourable laws such as the Sales Tax law
